Rest...take a load off.
Urban Screen HTX is a community-centered outdoor film experience creating spaces for Black people to rest, reconnect, and experience joy together.
Through curated films, music, food, and intentional gathering, Urban Screen transforms parks and public spaces into places where culture, conversation, and community can thrive. More than a movie night, Urban Screen HTX invites people to slow down, breathe deeply, and spend time with one another under the open sky.
Houston is home to one of the country's most vibrant Black communities, yet spaces dedicated to collective rest, cultural connection, and accessible programming remain limited. Urban Screen HTX was created to help fill that gap by building experiences that celebrate Black stories while strengthening community bonds and supporting local creatives.
Founded by Candace Elise Orange, a creative director, entrepreneur, and lifelong lover of film, Urban Screen began with a simple belief: everyone deserves a place to escape for a few hours.
As an art student at Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, Candace found refuge in a small neighborhood theater where she could disconnect from deadlines, quiet her mind, and simply follow a story. Years later, that same feeling became the foundation for Urban Screen.
Today, Urban Screen HTX creates experiences that blend film, music, culture, and community in ways that feel both nostalgic and restorative. The films are the ones that bring us back to ourselves. The music reminds us where we come from. The gathering reminds us that we are not alone.
Beginning in Fall 2026, Urban Screen HTX will relocate its programming to Houston's historic Third Ward with expanded community experiences, including Urban Screen HTX on the Green and the seasonal Urban "Scream" on the Green film series.
Bring your chair. Bring your people. Take your mind off everything for a while.
This is where culture plays.
